How Water Features Enhance Your Yard Design

When you look out at your pool, the horizontal expanse of water will reflect and refract light and color. The effect is to emphasize the surrounding landscape, and ripples of movement across the surface of the water are very calming. Now, imagine adding a vertical element of movement. Depending on the speed and amount of water, the vertical movement of water can be incredibly calming or very energizing. Instead of just having water reflected horizontally from the pool, you now have many elements at play: light and color reflected from other directions, acoustics, sounds… The water itself can become a work of art.

A good water feature designer will know exactly how to control each element to produce a desired effect. For example, if you want to create a relaxing oasis in your yard, the designer may create a bubbling rock fountain. If you want a dramatic effect, then the designer may create a laminar jet shooting from your deck to your pool instead, complete with fiber optic lights. Water features can also be used to create focal points in your yard. A good designer will create the water feature with the entire yard design in mind so your yard can be divided into stunning, functional areas for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoyment.

At All Family Pools, we understand that each person has different tastes and requirements from pool water features. To make sure all customers get exactly what they envisioned, we always take the time to listen to our clients in order to bring their vision to life.

Types of Pool Water Features

There is no limit to the type of pool water features we can design. Even the same type of water feature can be done in infinite ways using various materials, pump sizes, and with different water flows. Here is an overview of the main types of pool water features we can install.

  • Waterfalls: These are one of the most popular types of pool water features which we design. They send water from above cascading downward. Rock waterfalls are particularly popular as they look gorgeous even when not in use.
  • Deck Jets: This is an affordable option for a water feature. A small jet of water will be shot from the deck and into the pool. They are also called fountain spitters.
  • Fountain Bubble: This water feature originates from within the pool. A stream of water is shot up from the bottom of the pool and the water falls back into the pool. Often multiple fountain bubbles are installed in the pool, such as in a row, to create a dramatic effect. They can also be put on timers so they go off in a sequence.
  • Water Sconce: These features are mounted on or near the pool and release a stream of water into the pool.
  • Scupper: These are similar to water sconces, but they release water from a wider, flat surface to create a broader stream of water falling down.
  • Shear descent: These water features are often embedded into the wall or masonry above the pool. They release a sheet of water much like a waterfall.
  • Rainfall Curtains: As the name implies, these water features release small droplets of water in a curtain-like stream. They are considered very soothing and create a stunning visual effect.
  • Laminar Jets: These are one of the most impressive water features. They shoot water up from around the pool (such as from within flowerbeds) and into the pool. The arc of water resembles a glass tube and hits the pool without making any bubbles. Laminar jets require careful design and construction to get right.

The Water Feature Design Process

There are many things which must be considered when designing a water feature for a pool. Foremost, there is your personal taste and the effect you desire from the water feature (such as calming, energizing, or dramatic). However, there is much more to good water feature design services than making sure the actual feature looks great.

When you choose All Family Pools for water feature design services, you can count on us to factor in all of these elements:

  • Style of yard and how the water feature will complement it
  • Sunlight directionality and how the water feature will reflect light
  • Flow rate, acoustics, and sound of water feature
  • Lighting and color design
  • Eco-friendliness and sustainability
  • Landscape topography
  • Budget and operating costs

Our water design process is broken down into steps. The first step is a consultation with the client during which we go over your aesthetic tastes and objectives for installing the water feature. We then perform a property analysis and use this information in coming up with a 3D design rendering which takes into account the pool design as well as the surrounding landscaping. Once you are satisfied with the design of the water feature, we get to work on building it. All projects are completed on-time and within budget by our team of experts.
